Genre Data Sources & Updates

Genre information on artist.tools comes directly from Spotify. We display the genres Spotify assigns to artists, playlists, and keywords based on their aggregated data.

Where Genre Data Comes From

All genre data is sourced from Spotify's metadata:

  • Artists: We pull genres directly from Spotify's artist profiles

  • Playlists: We aggregate genres from all artists in the playlist and display the 5 most commonly occurring genres

  • Keywords: We analyze the top 50 playlists in Spotify Search for that keyword, then display the 5 most common genres across those playlists

artist.tools does not assign or modify genre data. We reflect what Spotify provides.

Why Genres May Be Missing

If you see missing genre information, here's what's happening:

For artists: Spotify hasn't assigned any genres to that artist yet. This is common for emerging artists or those with limited catalog data in Spotify's system.

For playlists or keywords: The majority of artists in the playlist (or in the top 50 playlists for a keyword search) are missing genres on Spotify. When we can't gather enough genre data to make an accurate estimate, we don't display partial information.

Spotify typically assigns genres as artists gain more streams, releases, and playlist placements. Genre assignments update over time as Spotify's algorithm processes more data.

Updating Genre Information

You can force artist.tools to refresh genre data from Spotify using the Update button:

  1. Navigate to the artist, playlist, or keyword page you want to update

  2. Look for the Update button in the top right corner (or in the actions menu [...] also in the top right)

  3. Click Update to pull the latest data from Spotify

The Update button fetches fresh data from Spotify—it cannot add genres if Spotify itself hasn't assigned any. If genres are still missing after an update, Spotify has not provided genre data for that artist.

How to Get Genres Added on Spotify

Since genre assignments happen on Spotify's side, you cannot directly edit them. Spotify's algorithm assigns genres based on:

  • Editorial playlist placements

  • Listener behavior and streaming patterns

  • Similar artist associations

  • Release metadata submitted through your distributor

Focus on getting placements on editorial and algorithmic playlists in your target genre. As your presence in those playlists grows, Spotify's system will assign appropriate genres to your artist profile.

Use artist.tools' Playlist Search and Keyword Explorer to find genre-specific playlists for pitching. Building momentum in your target genre helps Spotify's algorithm categorize your music correctly.
